A major benefit of water is its positive impact on your immune system. Water helps to flush toxins out of the body as well as provides your cells with the oxygen they need to function. In fact, without water, your body just wouldn’t survive. With the new coronavirus spreading throughout the world, it’s important to take a moment and find out how water can support your immune system, your body’s defence against infection.
Water keeps your cells oxygenated
Drinking plenty of water ensures your cells get the oxygen they need to function. That’s because your blood, which is mostly made up of water, will carry the oxygen around your body to places that need it. If your muscles and organs are working properly, then your immune system will work at its best, too.
Water flushes toxins out of your body
Water helps to flush harmful toxins from your body. For example, your kidneys use water to get rid of certain waste products from your body. However, if your water intake is low, your kidneys can’t work properly because the little water you do drink will be used up elsewhere. So, it’s really important to drink sips of water throughout the day to keep your fluid levels topped up, so your kidneys can get rid of any harmful substances.
Water helps to produce lymph
As well as blood, your body uses another fluid to transport white blood cells and nutrients to body tissues and it is called lymph. Your body needs water to produce lymph, without it your white blood cells, as well as nutrients, are unable to move around the body, putting you at risk of infection.
Lymph has several functions in the human body, including:
- Transporting immune cells including white blood cells from the bone marrow, throughout the body to where they may be needed
- Transports water and nutrients to and via the blood your cells
- Removes toxins from your blood
Water helps with your digestion
Your diet also helps to keep your immune system functioning well. There are many vitamins and minerals it needs to help fight infections. Water helps your body to digest its food, that’s why if you don’t drink lots of water and eat foods which do not provide a source of fibre, you may feel constipated.
Drinking water and eating fibre like fruit, veg and wholegrains keep your stools soft, so they are easier to pass. Your body also uses water to make hormones and digestive juices involved in the process of digestion, so it’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day.
Water keeps eyes and mouth clean
We’re all aware of the guidance that we should wash our hands regularly and avoid touching our faces during the coronavirus outbreak because it’s easy for the virus to enter the human body. However, water is an excellent way to keep areas such as your mouth and eyes clean without the need to touch them with your hands.
By drinking plenty of water you’re ensuring that your mouth and eyes remain moist like they need to be. In your mouth, water makes up 98% of your saliva which you need to rid the body of invading microbes as well as help you swallow your food. While the eyes remain moist to trap dust and dirt and remove it from the eyes before it can cause harm.
Without even realising, just by drinking a good amount of water every day you could be boosting your immune system. Water isn’t just needed to quench your thirst, it has many roles within the human body and is an essential nutrient, more essential than food.
