National Nutrition and Hydration Week 11th – 17th March 2019

Set yourself a target to eat and hydrate well during National Nutrition and Hydration week, 11th – 17th March 2019.

Since 2002, this week in March has been the week to think and act upon what you are putting into your body and start to rebalance your system. The phrase ‘you are what you eat (and drink)’ may have been well-used, but it is a proven fact.

Whilst originally this week was a national week, it has now spread throughout the globe and continues to gain impetus every year, as people become more and more aware of the importance of good nutrition and hydration. What are you waiting for?

Whilst eating good, healthy and nutritious food is of paramount importance, you could arguably say that water is even more crucial to your body, considering that it plays such a large part in keeping all of our organs and muscular skeletal functions in tip top condition. Our bodies can exist without food for several weeks, but it is only a matter of a few days before it becomes a serious threat to your wellbeing.

When you drink is as important as how much you drink. Drinking regularly each and every day is better for you than drinking large glasses of water, now and again when you think you are thirsty. Eating a well balanced diet with a good level of high water content foods (such as green leaves, cruciferous vegetables and low-sugar juicy fruits) will go towards your hydration levels.

This year, the BDA, the registered association of UK dieticians, are proud to support and emphasise the importance of combining nutrition and hydration for all age groups. High up on the agenda are also the needs of those that are vulnerable, including small children, the elderly and hospital patients/care home residents, many of whom personally don’t realise the importance – particularly in regards to hydration. Forgetting to drink is one of the main causes of dehydration, particularly in the elderly.

There are a multitude of events running during the week. On Wednesday 13th March, it’s the big Global Tea Party, where organisations throughout the world are participating in fun gatherings with nutritious food and plenty of healthy drinks! Why not organise one yourself, or one in your office – you could even raise money for your favourite charity, if you wanted. Try some fruit-infused water based drinks to get your hydration levels back on track. You don’t need bread – make some wraps using lettuce leaves or some vegetable/fruit kebabs (no cooking!) – be creative with healthy food and drinks.

Watch out for more events later in the year. ‘Thirsty Thursday’ takes place on June 13th, when you can really concentrate on your hydration. Look out for our post nearer the time.

Have a good week – eat well and hydrate on time!
